Voice change in transsexuals

Because the voice characteristics of transsexuals are frequently incongruent with their desired gender role, particularly for male-to- female transsexuals, voice training is integral to the gender reassignment process. This paper reviews the available research evidence on voice differences between males and females, voice training procedures for transsexuals, laryngeal surgery for voice change, and the efficacy of both voice training and laryngeal surgery. Training in other aspects of communication including speech sound articulation, vocabulary, and communication topic and style is also discussed. This review is concerned mainly with voice change for male-to-female transsexuals, but the need for change in communication behaviour for female-to-male transsexuals is briefly outlined.
